The standard reduction potential of and electrodes are 0.337 and 0.799 volts respectively. Construct a galvanic cell using these electrodes so that its standard emf is positive. For what concentration of Ag+ will the emf of the cell, at 25ºC, be zero if the concentration of Cu 2+ is 0.01 M.

= –0.337 V

= 0.799 V

= –0.799 V

Cu should be oxidized and Ag+ is reduced because

∴ Cu + 2Ag + ⎯→ Cu 2+ + 2 Ag

Thus the cell is :

Cu(s)/CuSO 4 (aq) || AgNO 3 (aq)/Ag(s)

∴ E cell =

E cell = log[Cu 2+ ]

E cell = –0.337 + 0.799 +

 E cell = 0, at [Cu

2+ ] = 0.01 M

∴ 0 = 0.462 +

∴ [Ag + ] = 1.477 × 10 –9 mol/L
